Tax Collector Surprise

You and your platoon have been checking potential "hot" spots in your new area of operations.  So far the day has been nothing but dry holes with little to no activity.  With the scout and gunships running low on fuel as well as the slicks you're riding in the company commander decides to call it a day.  This brings smiles to the faces of the men aboard the choppers because soon another day in the hot jungles of the 'Nam are almost over.  As you look out the doorway of your chopper you can see the countryside and below you it seems like you're following a highway back to the base.  When you look back towards the cockpit you can tell the pilots are talking about something and they seem a bit excited.  All of the sudden one of the door gunners smacks you on the shoulder and leans in close to yell in your ear.

"Skeeter 1 spotted a couple NVA in the village up ahead."  He shouts calmly.  "The Captain wants you guys to check it out but you'll be on your own for awhile.  We're almost out of fuel"

You know that Skeeter 1 is the scout ship that's with your convoy of choppers and almost as soon as the door gunner finishes talking the chopper your on dives to a lower altitude.  "This is it," you think to yourself. "time to make Uncle Sam proud."

What are you getting into?

I wanted to say hi to you guys before we actually met in a few weeks and also give you an idea of the kind of game I'll be running.  The game will be set during the Vietnam war.  This scenario is not based on any particular unit or battle that took place but could be a typical mission that occurred.  The above paragraph is meant to be a teaser and I've included a map on the right of what the gaming table will look like.  The map is not to scale and might change slightly.

About the map.  The top of the map will be North.  The gray line running north to south is the highway.  The blue line to the west of the highway is a small stream.  The brown lines to the east of the highway towards the south of the map are heavily used trails.  The numbered yellow rectangles to the west of the highway are the hootches/ village while the brown squares outlined in green are rice paddies.

You the players will have a choice of deploying your men in either LZ #1, LZ #2, or both.  Total US forces will be a platoon and depending on the number of players per game you can be running anywhere from a fireteam (5 men) to a squad (10 men) possible more if we don't have a lot of players.  I know doesn't sound like much lead to push around but I'll try to keep things "interesting" for you.

A little about the game.  I use 20mm miniatures from several different manufactures.  The terrain I use is mostly stuff I've made.  The rules we'll be using are "FNG" by Two Hour Wargames.  I really like these rules for several reasons.  They are easy to pick up and they are flexible enough to leave things out or add things with out throwing the rules out of whack.  Also there are not a ton of tables to refer to but yet you get the "feel" for the period at the same time.  The rules can go two ways.  You can go the route of a traditional wargame or the interesting thing about them is you can go more of a RPG (role playing game) lite.  The traditional wargame, as you know, is set around one game with a winner being decided at the end.  The RPG lite side of the rules focuses more on the player "surviving" his tour of duty and losing as few of his men as possible.

I hope you guys enjoy what I'm putting together.  This will be the first game I've run with other players.  I tend to do a lot of solo wargaming due to lack of people that are interested in hobby.  Feel free to check out the rest of my website while you're here.  If you have any questions or comments don't hesitate to contact me with the form below.  I'm looking forward to meeting you all soon.
